A Message From Interim Provost Joseph J. McCarthy: Kenyon Bonner

Dear Pitt Community, 

After nearly 20 years of advocating for students and the student experience at the University of Pittsburgh, Kenyon Bonner has notified me that he will step down from his role as vice provost for student affairs in December 2023 to become vice president and chief student affairs officer at the University of Virginia. The University of Virginia’s unique student self-governance, Honor System, and Academical Village will pose new and wonderful opportunities for him.

Transition in the Learning Research and Development Center

Dear Colleagues,

After 16 years leading the Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC), Charles (Chuck) Perfetti has shared with me his decision to step down from his role as its director in August 2024. Over the years, he has worked effectively to build LRDC’s strengths in the learning sciences, notably growing neuroscience and child development research areas, while also increasing the LRDC’s research connections within the educational mission of the University.

April Belback, Associate Vice Provost of Student Success and Advising

I am very pleased to announce that April Belback has been promoted to Associate Vice Provost of Student Success and Advising effective August 1. In this role, April will continue to lead and implement an institutional collaborative vision for holistic advising, mentoring and student success by connecting campus innovators, advisors, faculty, and students. She will report to Amanda Godley Vice Provost for Graduate Studies/Interim Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies.

Appointment of Interim Dean: School of Education

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to share that Eboni Zamani-Gallaher, Professor and Associate Dean for Equity, Justice, and Strategic Partnerships in the School of Education, has agreed to serve as the Renée and Richard Goldman Interim Dean of that school.

She will begin this role effective August 1, 2023, as Valerie Kinloch returns to her alma mater, Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) in Charlotte, North Carolina, to lead as its next president.
