December 2, 2022
Dear Colleagues,
I am delighted to announce that Dr. Carla Panzella, Dean of Students, will step into a new role at the University. Effective December 1, she will serve as Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Students.
In that capacity, she will serve as liaison to the Office of the Provost to support the Office of the Provost Academic Team, with a focus on maximizing the impact of student success programs for minoritized, first-generation, and Pell-eligible students (e.g., the Provost Academy, Strada Grant, Kessler Scholars, and McNair Scholars Program), while also supporting graduate and professional students.
She will also serve as a liaison to the Office of the Provost Data Analytics Team, leading assessment efforts designed to collect and analyze qualitative data to augment student survey data and provide a holistic understanding of the student experience.
As the Division of Student Affairs and Office of the Provost continue to enhance the student experience, our emphasis on assessment and student support programs will be vital to our success. Carla’s expertise and experience in both areas will be a key factor in that success.
In her new role, Carla will continue to report directly to Vice Provost for Student Affairs, Kenyon Bonner. She will also continue to fulfill her role as Dean of Students, overseeing the Student Experience, Community and Inclusion, Student Engagement and Professional Development, and Student Wellness teams within the Division of Student Affairs.
During Carla’s first year at Pitt, she was key in the successful reorganization of the Division of Student Affairs, which included the realignment of offices and programs to advance our strategic priorities and provide a seamless student experience. Thanks to her efforts, the Student Affairs leadership team is more diverse, talented, and equipped to propel Student Affairs into a future that requires new talents, sensibilities, innovation, and cultural competence.
Carla has gained the trust of student leaders and Student Affairs staff and has been a great thought partner and colleague.
I am excited about the opportunities this new role affords the University in supporting student success. Please join me in congratulating Carla.
Best,
Ann
