Office of the Provost

Announcement

June 29, 2004

Dear Colleagues:

Dr. Michael A. Worman has informed me that he wishes to step down from the presidency of the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville effective August 31, 2005. His departure will conclude seventeen years of leadership and service to the Titusville campus, the University of Pittsburgh, and northwestern Pennsylvania. I am deeply appreciative of Dr. Worman’s very significant contributions to the University and equally appreciative of the generous help he has given me and many of our colleagues in a wide variety of activities.

Dr. Worman received his baccalaureate degree in Sociology at Grove City College and his master's in International Affairs and doctorate in Political Science at Florida State University. He also attended Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management. Before joining the faculty and administration of the University in 1988 as President of the University of Pittsburgh-Titusville and Professor of Political Science, he served as Executive Deputy Secretary of Education for the Pennsylvania Department of Education, where he assisted in the formulation and execution of Commonwealth educational policies and helped draft the Governor’s response to A Nation at Risk. He had also served as Dean of Institutional Advancement and Adjunct Associate Professor of Political Science at Philadelphia University and as Associate Professor of Political Science at Elizabethtown College

Under President Worman’s leadership, the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville has flourished. He led an annual giving campaign that has raised one million dollars in unrestricted giving. The physical plant of the Titusville campus has expanded, most notably through the construction of the Broadhurst Science Center and the Helene Barco Duratz Plaza. Dr. Worman initiated the creation of new academic programs at Titusville in health care, new associate degrees in the liberal arts and natural sciences, several certificate programs, and a collaborative bachelor’s degree program in business with the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. He played a crucial role in the establishment of the George J. Barco Center for Continuing Education. Pitt-Titusville is blessed with a strong and cooperative faculty, staff, and Advisory Board who have all worked for the common good of the campus, its students, and service to the region; I know they join me in a deep respect for the significant impact Mike Worman has had on the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville.

A search committee will be formed in the coming weeks with the intention of identifying President Worman’s successor by next summer.

Sincerely,

James V. Maher
