Office of the Provost

Announcement

April 21, 2005

Dear Colleagues:

I am delighted to announce that Dr. Marc Malandro has accepted my offer to serve as the new Director of the University’s Office of Technology Management, effective May 1, 2005.

Dr. Malandro has been serving as the University’s Interim Director of the Office of Technology Management (OTM) since March 1, 2005; before that, he served as the Technology Licensing Manager for OTM. In both roles, Dr. Malandro has demonstrated the talent and judgment needed to enable the Office of Technology Management to meet its mission to serve the faculty, staff, students, and administration of the University, as well as the public, by seeking fair market value of the University’s intellectual property, using best business practices for the benefit of the University and general community.

Dr. Malandro earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Florida College of Medicine and completed his postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Human Molecular Genetics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Malandro is the co-inventor on 10 issued patents and patent applications. Prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh community last year, Dr. Malandro co-founded Sagres Discovery, a functional biology company focused on the understanding of the molecular basis of cancer; his responsibilities as Vice President of Technology and Strategic Alliances for that company included managing company intellectual property, technology licensing, and overseeing scientific collaborations.

I am confident that Dr. Malandro has the necessary skills to effectively manage the important work of technology management at the University.

Sincerely,

James V. Maher
