Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Sharon P. Smith has accepted my offer to become the next President of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, effective July 1, 2007. Dr. Smith earned her AB, MA, and PhD in Economics from Rutgers University. After working as an economist for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, as District Manager for American Telephone and Telegraph Company, and as Visiting Senior Research Economist for Princeton University, she served as Professor of Management Systems and Dean of the College of Business Administration, and then Dean of the Colleges of Business and of the Faculty of Business at Fordham University. Since 2006, she has been the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Special Projects Advisor for National University and for the National University System in La Jolla, California.

During her distinguished academic and administrative career, Dr. Smith has published three books and over 40 articles and book reviews. She has served as Governor of the Security Traders Association, a trustee of St. Barnabas Hospital, Chair of the Partners in Health Board of Trustees, President of the NASDAQ Stock Market Educational Foundation, Inc., Chair of the Board of Governors for NASD Dispute Resolution, and, from 2000 – 2006, as Public Governor of NASD.

As a senior administrator, Dr. Smith has established a record of distinguished performance in strategic planning, reinvigorated academic programs, and administration. Both Chancellor Nordenberg and I respect Dr. Smith’s strong interest in a student-centered, research-focused, and team-oriented environment, her experience in working effectively with community leaders, and her record of achievement in providing meaningful public visibility to key initiatives. Dr. Smith is committed to the mission of the University of Pittsburgh and to the Greensburg Campus’s important role within it.

Dr. Smith’s commitment and experience will help move the campus forward to an even higher level of attainment. I look forward to working with Dr. Smith and the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg community to ensure the continuing success of the campus under her capable leadership.

Sincerely,

James V. Maher
